The Romantic Rhine is a real Eldorado for hikers and ramblers. With the Rheinsteig®, the RheinBurgenWeg and the Traumpfade to choose from, outdoor enthusiasts are spoilt for choice. Which trail will you take first?

Hiking back in Time

One of the most beautiful hiking trails in the Valley of the Romantic Rhine is the RheinBurgenWeg or ‘Rhine Castle Trail’, which runs along the left bank of the Rhine from Bingen to Remagen-Rolandseck. Medieval knights’ castles and fortifications are the cultural highlights on this technically demanding hiking route. There’s always another battlement or tower waiting around the next bend in the Rhine. They are the masterpieces of Rhenish architecture, covering all periods from the Middle Ages up to the 19th century. Many of the buildings are open to visitors and offer insights into everything from courtly life, everyday life in medieval times to interior furnishings through the ages. As you progress along the trail you’ll gradually develop a passion for the Romantic Age, the Rhine’s castles and the exciting sagas and legends that surround them.
There are some special attractions in store en route including the world’s highest cold water geyser at Andernach, and the Klettersteige or vie ferrate at Boppard and on Oberwesel’s Oelsberg. Thanks to the excellent rail and riverboat network, the RheinBurgenWeg is perfect for day-trippers, too.
The trail has been certified in accordance with the criteria of the Deutscher Wanderverband (German Ramblers’ Association), giving the Romantic Rhine yet another quality route.
